西暦1588年…大航海時代を経てその絶頂にあったスペイン・ハプスブルク家は当時の弱小新興国イングランドとの交戦を決意し、「最高の祝福を受けた大いなる艦隊（Grande y Felicísima Armada）」と呼ばれる数々の栄光に輝く大艦隊を大ブリテン島に派した。逆巻く波と暗雲が立ち込める空…まさにイングランドの未来を暗示するかのような絶望的な戦局…ドーバー海峡を埋め尽くすガレー船の姿に誰もが死を覚悟していた。

その時…1頭の白馬が突然荒れ狂う風を切り裂いて祖国のために命を捨てることを誓った男達の前に立ちはだかる。それは騎上の人となった”我が女王”その人であった。女王はイングランド王たる宝刀を抜き放つと天にかざしながら男達にこう告げたのである…


我が愛するもの達よ！我が身を案ずる者達はみなこう言う。「荒くれ共に命を委ねるのはいかがなものか」と。しかし、我は卿らにはっきりと伝えおく。我が愛する者達の忠誠を疑ってまで生きながらえたいとは思わないと。それは「暴君」のすることだからだ。

まさに決戦の真っ只中に我が身を置くのは、卿らとともに生死を別つ覚悟だからである。我が信ずる神のために、我が王国のために、そして我が国民のために、自分の名誉と血を、そしてたとえ屍となろうとも、この身をささげる覚悟である。

※ イギリス人に迂闊に「イングランド」と言わない方がいいです。狭い島国でありながら「俺はイングランド人です」「私はウェールズ人です」などと厳格に区別を求めてきますし、求めてこなくても鈍感力を発揮せずにきちんと尊重するようにして下さい。「ブリティッシュ」といいましょう。一番無難です。民族の区別に対して彼らに「ユーアイ」という文字は一切ありません。

And therefore I am come amongst you at this time, not as for my recreation or sport, but being resolved, in the midst and heat of the battle, to live or die amongst you all; to lay down, for my God, and for my kingdom, and for my people, my honor and my blood, even the dust. I know I have but the body of a weak and feeble woman; but I have the heart of a king, and of a king of England, too; and think foul scorn that Parma or Spain, or any prince of Europe, should dare to invade the borders of my realms: to which, rather than any dishonor should grow by me, I myself will take up arms; I myself will be your general, judge, and rewarder of every one of your virtues in the field.
